The winner of the 999 Award is Tanya De Weymarn

Tanya DeweymarnTanya is a Consultant in A&E in Cheltenham and Gloucester Hospitals, leading on elderly patients that are frail and also patients that have dementia. The Emergency Department (ED) is the front door of the hospital and sees emergency presentations of all conditions.  Almost 30% of presentations to the ED are people over the age of 65 and this percentage continues to increase year on year.

Older people are admitted to hospital more frequently, have a longer length of stay and occupy more bed days in acute hospitals compared to other patient groups.  It is well known that older patient's function can deteriorate quickly while in hospital, often resulting in increased care needs on discharge.  Over the next 20 years, the number of people aged 85 and over in the UK is set to increase by two-thirds, compared with a 10 % growth in the overall population

ED needs to excel at identifying and treating both elderly and frail patients.

Tanya is the most amazingly caring, lady, understanding the needs of elderly patients that are confused and feeling poorly - she is completely inspiring and works tirelessly to improve the ED room, so that the patients benefit.  She is just about to launch an appeal that she has funded by speaking at a local Rotary group and getting them to support the Red Sheet initiative, which is a very simple way of identifying at risk of falling patients - by simply placing a red sheet over the patient.  Immediately staff and visitors are aware there is a patient at risk.     When you visit the ED room, you will always see Tanya being so caring to her patients, she has time and patients with the elderly and treats them with the greatest of respect.  She is quite simply an angel, respected by staff and patients and held in such high regard.

Nominator: Karen Organ

Our runner-up is Critical Care Dr Matt Campbell, Critical Care Dr Andy Lockyer, Critical Care Paramedic Neil Hooper and pilot Captain Jim Green from Great Western Air Ambulance Charity Critical Care Team

In 2017, Great Western Air Ambulance Charity Critical Care team completed 304 missions in Gloucestershire. In June, our crew saved the life of 3-year-old Zach Joyner, who nearly drowned whilst on holiday with his family. We would like to nominate our life-saving team on the day for their outstanding work.

The 1st of June started like many others for the Joyner family, little did they realise their 3-year-old son would be left fighting for his life and in need of critical care from the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity.

Zach’s Mum Nicki says: “It was a hugely traumatic experience for us all as a family and one we will never forget. It’s every parent’s worst nightmare to see your child lifeless, and not a situation you ever expect to be in. Dr Andy and the GWAAC air ambulance team put our minds at rest that Zach was receiving the best care, and we felt he couldn’t be in better hands. They flew him to Bristol Children’s Hospital as it is a centre of excellence for major trauma patients, and we continued to receive the most outstanding care from the staff there too.”

Thanks to the actions of his family, and the speed with which our critical care team were on the scene, Zach has made a full recovery. He was even able to visit the GWAAC air base to meet the team, bringing his own teddy aptly named Dr Andy!

The GWAAC crew work tirelessly 365 days a year to provide life-saving support to the most critically ill. They are the primary air ambulance for Gloucestershire and get called to on average 5 incidents every day. Without this charity and the amazing team, many lives may have been lost.
